Born in Cambrils, he was a famous anatomical surgeon and inventor holding the chair of Anatomy at the University of Barcelona.  His knowledge of anatomy was well received by English surgeons due to the precise techniques he developed for crural fractures.  France adopted his surgical system, which came to be known as “Gimbernat’s ligament”, into the fibrous part of the crural canal for surgical interventions dealing with this defect.

In Madrid, he constituted and organised the San Carlos School of Surgery acting as a Professor in surgery.

He invented several surgical instruments which are still in use today and was a reformist of the teaching of medicine.
